A high-level meeting held last night at Villa Somalia addressed sensitive issues related to the country’s political process, particularly the efforts to amend the constitution.
The meeting was attended by the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, the leadership of both chambers of Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama representing Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, and a committee of ministers representing the five major clans involved in political power-sharing.
During the session, a special committee was announced to accelerate and coordinate activities related to amending the Provisional Constitution, ensuring that the constitutional process is completed fully.
The meeting focused on three key areas:
- Accelerating Constitutional Amendments: Participants agreed on the urgent need to complete the remaining work on the constitutional amendments to establish a comprehensive legal framework.
- Parliamentary Attendance and Accountability: The meeting emphasized the importance of parliamentarian ministers attending sessions consistently to strengthen legislative functions and accountability.
- Facilitating Lawmakers’ Access: It was called for all members of Parliament, whether sanctioned or not, to be allowed access to Villa Somalia and other key government locations, safeguarding the respect and privileges of parliamentarians.
This decision came after complaints that the names of some lawmakers had been posted on security websites, creating obstacles to their movements.
The meeting reflects the government’s renewed effort to accelerate constitutional work while reducing conflicts that affect parliamentary operations.
