The Federal Republic of Somalia has been elected to serve on the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the 2026–2028 term, marking what officials described as a historic milestone reflecting the country’s diplomatic progress and renewed standing on the continental and global stage.

Somalia’s election to the PSC underscores the confidence and support shown by African Union member states, signaling growing recognition of Mogadishu’s re-engagement in regional and international affairs after years of instability.

In a statement, the Somali government expressed its gratitude to all member states that supported and voted for its candidacy. The collective backing, it said, demonstrates strong cooperation and a shared vision for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Africa.

The Peace and Security Council is the African Union’s primary body responsible for the prevention, management, and resolution of conflicts across the continent. Somalia’s inclusion is expected to bolster its role in shaping discussions on regional security and stability.
