ANKARA (Banaadir24)— The Embassy of Somalia in Turkey issued a rare and urgent appeal on Wednesday for Somali nationals living in Iran to contact the diplomatic mission if they wish to evacuate amid escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel.
In a statement on social media, the embassy asked Somali citizens in Iran—many of them students and small-business owners—to establish contact and provide valid travel documentation if they decide they want assistance returning to Somalia .
The alert comes after a recent spate of Israeli airstrikes on Iranian infrastructure, including hospitals, weapons factories and government buildings. Although only a few dozen Somalis are estimated to live in Iran, reports suggest at least one Somali medical student in Tehran was injured in a strike; sources say the student is in stable condition .
Somali businessperson Ahmed Mahmoud Abdi, who resides in Iran, shared with BBC Somali that growing fears have prompted members of his community to meet and evaluate whether to remain or return. “People are feeling the pressure,” he said. “We’re staying for now, but there’s clear tension.” .
The embassy’s move underscores the precarious position of foreign nationals in Iran and highlights Somalia’s efforts to protect its diaspora in volatile regions. Operating out of Ankara, the embassy is coordinating with Turkish authorities and international partners to facilitate safe passage for those who choose to leave .
While Somalia previously evacuated citizens from crisis zones such as Sudan, Ukraine and Libya, this mission comes amid an intensifying and unpredictable conflict. With no diplomatic presence in Tehran, the embassy in Turkey has become the central hub for consular outreach and logistical support .
As tensions widen and airstrikes continue, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of its citizens abroad. The embassy has set up a dedicated hotline and is urging nationals in Iran to register their intentions promptly and avoid areas under military threat .
