The Council of Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia has removed General Odawaa Yusuf Rage from his position as Commander of the Somali National Army (SNA) and appointed General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud as his replacement.

General Ibrahim previously served as the Commander of the General Support Command of the Somali National Army and is among the senior officers trained by the Government of Turkey. His appointment marks a notable shift in the military leadership.

General Odawaa, who served twice as army chief, has been replaced by a younger officer, signaling a change in the direction and structure of the country’s military command. Although no official reason has been given for the leadership change, it comes amid growing criticism following the withdrawal of government forces from several key areas over the past year.

The appointment of the new army chief takes place at a time when Somalia continues to face persistent security challenges. General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud is expected to lead renewed military efforts against the militant group Al-Shabaab.
