Heavy airstrikes targeted positions held by Al-Shabaab militants on Thursday in Waabweyn, an area under the district of Maxaas in Somalia’s Hiiraan region.
The operation was carried out jointly by the Somali National Army and international partners, according to government officials. The strikes reportedly hit camps where Al-Shabaab fighters were said to be mobilizing.
Military officials confirmed to local media that the bombardment inflicted casualties on the group, including deaths and injuries. However, they did not provide an exact figure for the number of casualties.
Authorities described the operation as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security and weaken Al-Shabaab’s presence in parts of the Hiiraan region.
There was no immediate comment from Al-Shabaab regarding the strikes in Waabweyn.
In recent days, military operations against the militant group have intensified across several areas of Hiiraan, particularly those under Maxaas district, as government forces step up their offensive against Al-Shabaab.
